Global Warming; Man made or all natural?

Global Warming. The all too common phrase that is thrown around every day in casual conversations by normal people. But what really is global warming? Is it a natural cycle of the Earth, heating and cooling? Or is it a man made phenomenon started with the industrial age? Think for a second about a major volcano eruption, and the aftermath of an event that catastrophic. A volcano eruption releases greenhouse gasses on an enormous scale. How would this eruption of gasses compare to the gasses that are put into the atmosphere by humans each year? One single major eruption causes much more greenhouse gasses to be emitted than the human race puts into the atmosphere for years. The earth has a natural cycle of cooling and warming, with natural causes. Global warming is a natural phenomenon that is part of a larger cycle, which was not, and is not created by the industrial age.

  1. This is a great topic for an opinion editorial. The use of rhetorical questions and scientific information is a great way to capture the attention of your reader. But who is your reader? How does this relate to BYU students or administration? Why should they care? The answers to these need to be included in your introduction and I was unable to find them. Great paragraph but make sure you relate it back to the BYU audience.

  2. I really appreciate your paragraph because I get tired of those that whine about global warming. However, who is your audience? Seems unclear to whether you are writing to those that believe in global warming is only man's fault or not.

  3. Global warming has been tossed around for quite a while and i have to say that i am on your side. I think that you should provide some statistics so it's not just word of mouth trying to convince your audience.

  4. I think it would add to your argument if you included statistics like how much CO2 a volcano puts out when it erupts, the average temperature over the years, etc. It would add logos to your argument and enhance your argument.

There is one thing that I find difficult to argue, and that is that our use of fossil fuels HAS added to the CO2 emissions. It would help to address this in your essay.

Finally, I think it would help to give another example. The only one you have so far is volcanoes erupting. What other "natural phenomenons" add to the emission of CO2?

  5. You should put in something about how Global warming has been changed to Climate Change to make it sound less dramatic. I think it would help with your point that it is a natural process and that we as a race haven't ruined our planet in this way. Although I also am curious as to your audience.
