Honoring Your Code or the Honor Code
How does Brigham Young University have such a unified student body? It achieves this through the student Honor Code. No student should actively fight the Honor Code, but why is it that many students feel the obligation to push the Honor Code to its limits? Is it really necessary to cause contention over something that is so easy to follow? Before entering this university we agreed to follow the standards and we pledged our word to do so. Choosing not to follow these rules reflects poorly on not only our character, but our integrity. By not following the honor code it puts our own honor at risk. Is fighting the Honor Code really worth giving up our own integrity?

It seems to me that the reason people push the limits is beacuse it is juvenal nature to do so. People think they can attract or stand out to the opposing gender by breaking the rules. What they dont realize is that by doing so, they aren't attracting the kind of people they want to be attracting.
ReplyDeleteIs your audience the people who push the honor code, or uphold it? Sounds a little preachy for people who push the honor code. Also, some would that they just got lazy, or that they want some individuality. To them, not pushing the honor code is giving up their integrity.
ReplyDeleteI had a little trouble distinguishing who the audience is, as did taylor. I think that maybe you could include the good side and bad side of the honor code. It seems like your being a little harsh to those that may push the honor code a little; they may just be having some harmless fun.
ReplyDeleteI like that you use a lot of questions in this introduction. I think that it really draws the audience in. I do, however, agree that it is hard to distinguish exactly who your audience is.
ReplyDeleteI like that your intro is very catchy. All of the questions bring the reader into the topic. However, some of the wording seems a little harsh such as "No student should actively fight the Honor Code" or "Is it really necessary to cause contention over something that is so easy to follow" I feel like that would draw them away from your writing by accusing them a little too much.
ReplyDeleteOnce again who is your audience. I'm guessing the students. Once you figure out who your audience is then put more of a focus on them. I love the topic! While I do sometimes think the rules are ridiculous I did sign the honor code, knowing full well what I was getting into. My suggestion is to work on your ethos, which will really help win your audience over.
